Chapter 14 — Achievements & Public Service
A record of service
More than three decades in public office, set out as a ledger rather than a eulogy. What is recorded here is what can be documented: offices held, agreements concluded, precedents set.

Three areas of public service
Government
The machinery of state
Seven years as Head of the Federal Chancellery (1998–2005, including the period as State Secretary), coordinating federal policy, the intelligence services and the Agenda 2010 reforms.
Diplomacy
Two terms at the Foreign Office
Federal Foreign Minister for more than seven years in total, through the Russia-Georgia war, the Ukraine crisis, the Iran negotiations and the Syrian war, and OSCE Chairperson-in-Office in 2016.
Head of state
Two presidential terms
Federal President since 2017, the first Social Democrat re-elected to the office, steering two difficult government formations and an early dissolution of the Bundestag.

Honours
On awards and orders
As Federal President, Steinmeier is the head of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and confers it on others — including, on 18 October 2024, the Grand Cross special class on President Joe Biden. Like other heads of state, he has received foreign state orders in the course of state visits.
This archive lists only honours that can be verified individually against official sources. A complete register of his decorations is not reproduced here.
Beyond office
A private act of public note
In August 2010, while leader of the opposition, Steinmeier took leave from politics to donate a kidney to his wife, Elke Büdenbender. The transplant took place on 24 August 2010. The decision was respected across party lines and drew public attention to organ donation in Germany. Personal life
